Motokatsu Inoue (1918-1993)
Founder of Yuishinkai
Motokatsu Inoue was groomed since age 8 or 10 to become a well-rounded and excellent Martial Artist. His first teacher and mentor was Seiko Fujita, 14th Grandmaster of the Koga Ninja-Ryu. The latter’s style of Ju-Jutsu emphasized combat applications as opposed to the schools that stressed spiritual ideals. Fujita viewed that Karate was too linear and Aikido too circular, and hence his own style was close to an aggressive form of Aiki. His style contained many open hands techniques and the primary targets were the eyes, throat and groin. Kicks were mostly done to the groin or legs. He taught that hand or foot attack always preceded throws.
Fujita was a Ninjutsu weapons expert. The young Inoue was instructed daily in Shuriken Jutsu (iron darts) of the Shingetsu Ryu.
Fujita wanted the young Inoue to become an expert at all Martial Arts and so, in addition to his own Ju-Jutsu and Shuriken Jutsu, he had Inoue instructed in the Jo-Jutsu of the Diaen-Ryu.
When Inoue entered Keio University, he was instructed by Fujita to join the Sumo club for Fujita believed the Tai Sabaki (body movements) in Sumo would benefit him
Following this, Fujita sent him for further training to Yasuhiro Konishi who taught Karate Jutsu, and who also was a licensed Kendo teacher.
Fujita sent Inoue O'Sensei to learn Aiki with Gozo Shioda, one of Morihei Ueshiba’s top disciples. Shioda had formed his own school, Yoshin Aikido, whose style is more oriented towards combat than Uyeshiba Aikido. Shioda trained and graded Inoue O'Sensei up to 3rd Dan.
To complete his training, Inoue O'Sensei's mentor sought out the greatest weapons genius of his time, Shinken Taira. Inoue O'Sensei became the best pupil and friend of Taira. Inoue was actually, at one point, the only student of Taira to have learned all 42 weapons kata from Taira. Before Taira died in 1970, Inoue O'Sensei became president of the Society for the Promotion and Preservation of the Martial Arts, the Ryukyu Kobujutsu Hozon Shinko Kai which is presently headed by his son, Soke Kisho Inoue. Taira’s society itself was named the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinko Kai and also exists to this day.
It is through this eclectic training that Motokatsu Inoue came to found his own style, Yuishinkai. The name comes from his own nickname given to him by his life-long teacher, Seiko Fujita, and means "Association of the Sincere Heart/Mind/Spirit".
